ICT's Tool Review: Youtube

Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/) is an Internet Platform in which you can watch and upload videos, of any kind.

This platform is certainly useful for the English classes because in there, you can find many channels with videos, songs and classes that could make your class to be less traditional, and more innovative.

First, you can find songs to practice English structures. For example, here we have a video from SuperSimpleSongs that can help you teach little kids about the use of "I like/I don't like".

Secondly, you can foster a diverse ability respectful environment, by using videos that responds to everyone's needs. In this case, there is a video from the same channel, that can help you teach about the ABC in English, with a catchy song that, also, says the comparative form of an adjective (faster). I like this video because it also works well on deaf children, as it shows the ABC in American Sign Language.

But YouTube is not only for young learners, it can also be useful for teenagers and adults too. The next video was created in PowToons, but the creator uploaded it on YouTube. It briefly explains the difference between the Present Simple Tense and the Present Continous Tense by showing graphic examples, and contrasting them. It would be useful for the teacher to flip his/her classroom, or to show it on class, to rehearse the contents.

As in any other ICT Tool, we have the limitation of the need of WiFi connection to watch the videos. In this case, we also have the distraction of more than 1.000.000 videos that may be more interesting for the learners than the one we want to show them.

  1. Since I was a kid I've seen videos on YouTube of any kind. Stories, documentaries, tutorials, step by step videos, news, music, gameplays, etc. The quantity of information and hours of videos that YouTube has is just unbelievable. One of the aspects that I really love of YouTube is that you can comment the videos with your own point of view, besides, You can see the multiculturality of the audience that comments the videos, that argue or give different opinions, making students or learners to face a real use for English as a L2.
