ICT's Tool Review: Go Comics

Go Comics is an internet platform used to find and read comics online.

This tool is relevant to language learning because students can improve on their reading skills by looking for comics to read, which is much more interesting for every student (child, teenager or adult) than reading a text in an English Book. Also, these comics are actually american, so you could use them as realia in your classroom.

The use of digital comics may be helpful for those learnears who are still having trouble making organized writing assignments, in terms of structure. "They have ideas, but they lack the written language skills to create a beginning, follow a sequence of ideas and then draw their writing to a logical conclusion" (Bledsoe, 2010, cited in Yunus, Salehi, Tarmizi, Farhana, Shalini).

An example of how to use this platform to practice writing could be to erase the written parts, for the students  to complete the texts with a creative dialogue. Finally, you can decice if you give them, or not, the real comic, so they could read it.

You can use it to promote both, reading and writing, at the very same time the students are developing their creativity.

I do not really see limitations on the use of comics. If you do not have WiFi connection you can always print them or show them on a PowerPoint Presentation.

  1. I like comics, nice tool. What I love of comics is that most of the time, they reflect the author's life, background and ideology as an example of Mafalda or Condorito. What kind of comics you would use with your students?
